Let's have a holiday!

Gambar
A family holiday is always fun. It's time to keep away from the hustle and bustle of the city life. It's time to escape from your daily routine. You will have much time to tighten up your family intimacy. Anyhow, holiday serves as one of the basic need for some people. European people usually have a special schedule an budget for the holiday. They will regularly spend some time to have a holiday, not only in their country but also abroad. That's why we can find a lot of tourist from Europe. How can they afford for such expensive holiday? The key factor is called management. In my own version, management refers to the ability to manage many aspects, such as money and time. For those who have abundant sources of income, having a holiday won't be a problem. What about us? What about me? How can we save some money in order to have a holiday? Should we say 'yes' for some loan offerings we find in a leaflet, brochure or even in our inbox? Is it worth enough to ask fo...

Happy Teacher Day...!

Gambar
Few days ago my student texted me saying Happy Teacher Day..It's was a midday when I remembered how people think about me. Am I a teacher? I don't even think that I deserve to be a teacher. Then I reply to my student saying that I am not a teacher (yet). Still she insists that I am her teacher, her best teacher indeed.  A teacher  is someone who educates and shares knowledge to the students. He or she is in charge to improve the students horizon. He is someone who shows the real world and lends his hand to guide the students to face it. And I don't think I have such qualifications. What I have been trying to do for the last 11 years is just to share my knowledge, based on mutual understanding, of course. I don't teach at school so I don't pay attention to the students' attitude. I teach at a course to drill my students to be able to speak English well. I share some tips and tricks on how to do tests  so my students are able to get good grade. I show my studen...

Is Sour Sop The New Cure For Cancer?  By Sahiba Sethi In April 2 010 the world was introduced in dramatic fashion to a fruit tree, which was supposed to cure all forms of cancer. The news came in the form of an e-mail that went viral. According to the email, an unnamed drug company had done extensive research on this fruit and found it very effective against cancer. However, because they were unable to do a synthetic version of the fruit tree the research was dropped and its results never published. The e-mail went on to say that in 1976 the US National Cancer Institute conducted its own scientific research and the results showed that the plant’s “leaves and stems were found effective in attacking and destroying malignant cells.” Although the results were supposedly published in an internal report, it was never released to the public, according to the e-mail. Whether the e-mail is true or not, the fruit tree known as the sour sop variously ...

How to use PPt in teaching English

What is PowerPoint? PowerPoint is software bundled in MS office and used for creating presentations usually in the form of slideshows. Over the years Microsoft has been updating the software, each time making it even better. Your computer might already have PowerPoint installed.   Why use PowerPoint presentations in ESL Classrooms? My experience Teaching English or any other language especially to large classes of kindergarten, primary schools and absolute beginner students, can prove to be a nightmare at times. As a teacher of large classes especially, I found the use of PowerPoint presentations a great aid in my teaching (by large classes I mean classes of 40-80 students). In China where I teach, large classes are not uncommon.)  So how do you teach a class of 50-80 students staring at you, hungry for knowledge?    Luckily, most classrooms in China are well equipped with overhead projectors and in some cases they have school computer ...

The wonderful Gunung Kidul

Krakal beach is one of many magnificent beaches in Gunung Kidul. It's only about 45 kms from Giwangan bus station in Jogjakarta. To reach this place, you need to take a bus in the direction to Wonosari. You'll spent 45 minutes. From Wonosari, you can rent a car to this beach. On Sundays, there are usually some cars which will take the visitors to this beach. If you rent acar for daily basis, you need to negotiate about the fee. Usually it ranges from Rp. 150.000 a day.

Students' grammatical error

I happened to give basic grammar quiz for my students. They are from English department in the first semester. Anyhow I guess their English is better than other department. I list a prompt in the question sheet, then they were supposed to write sentences based on the following criteria. The instructions are as follows: Write down sentences about: 1. Habitual action  2. an interrupted action in the past 3. past nominal sentence 4. prediction 5. an activity which is in progress The result is quite surprising. Based on the students' answers, it can be analyzed that they only know a little about the concept of the sentences. Since the first time, I avoid to mention the tenses, such as present simple, past continues, etc. Instead, I write about the concept behind those names of the tenses such as habitual action for simple present,  an interrupted action in the pastfor past continues, simple future for prediction etc. And these are somerthing that they haven't mastered well.
